Giving Back Gives You Pleasure

"Now that I'm retired, I'll finally get to…." Everyone finishes that statement differently, but most people tend to do something they enjoy. It could be participating in a sport, visiting family or starting a new hobby. But, isn't it great if the things that give you enjoyment also help someone else in need?

"I find that keeping busy seems to make retirement go well. I do a lot of sport fishing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I try to go every other month.

Also, I am involved with the Lions Club we do a lot of work with hearing and eye sight. I just finished a year as President. We also have a lot of projects going on, with this I always have pleasure and I am also helping people.

I also travel to Phoenix to visit my daughter. It makes time fly by."

Richard Mason
Harrisonburg, VA

If you like interacting with other people, there's lots of options to be social and help others. Plus, you may meet other volunteers in the process.

Retiree Richard Mason gives back by helping people through the Lions Club, an international network that has united people all over the world for one cause: giving back to their communities. Lions Club is primarily known for working to end preventable blindness; however, the organization also participates in a variety of projects, such as cleaning up local parks and providing supplies to victims of natural disasters. Find a Lions Club near you.

Some other options include volunteering at homeless shelters where you could distribute meals. Or you might try becoming a tutor who helps children and adults learn to read. Think about helping out at a local hospital where you can visit with patients or help family members find services. Share your wisdom, experience and positive influence with children by mentoring them.

Maybe you're more interested in helping those who can't ask for help. You might volunteer at your local humane society or animal shelter. You can assist by bathing and grooming animals, walking dogs or socializing cats. Also consider donating food, old blankets and other supplies. Or help animals from an administrative angle by providing humane education or stuffing envelopes for mailings.

If you enjoy being outside, there's lots of ways to help the world and be "green." By joining a parks and outdoor areas volunteer group, you can help with trail construction and maintenance, clean up trash, plant flowers and trees, or lead hikes. Not only are you helping a city or state park, but you're also getting in some exercise. If you're not able to volunteer in a more physical way, you can also help in the offices of environmental groups, start recycling campaigns, lead educational seminars or lobby on behalf of conservation issues.

Try these links to find a local group: No matter how you choose to give back, you'll likely "receive" as much as you give ... such as the satisfaction of accomplishment, feeling needed, being connected and involved, and truly enjoying your retirement years.
