Rice Krispies Report Aims to Spark Lifelong Connection Between Parents, Kids

Savoring special moments with kids is essential - and a new report courtesy of Kellogg's Rice Krispies offers tips for parents looking to do just that.
'Celebrating' connections

Among the tips offered in the "Celebrating Kids Just Being Kids" report are:

Invite your kids to help with meal preparation. Kids are more likely to talk to you about their day when engaged in an activity.

Join children in their world - the world of play. Get on the floor and spend some time every day doing the kind of things they like to do.

Designate one night a week as family night. Rent a movie, pop some popcorn and relax together with no rush or agenda.

The report, "Childhood is Calling: Celebrating Kids Just Being Kids," offers insight on the importance of sharing feelings, laughs and precious moments with kids.

All too often, as research shows, parents spend every spare moment shuttling children between music lessons, sports games and play dates. But with such hectic schedules, 94 percent of moms feel kids today grow up too quickly, according to The Intelligence Group's Mom Intelligence Report.

Released as part of Rice Krispies' ongoing Operation Spark initiative, the "Celebrating Kids Just Being Kids" report encourages parents to celebrate childhood and provides advice for families on finding simple moments of joy and connection.

"The Rice Krispies brand has always been dedicated to celebrating the magic of childhood," says Karl Miller, brand manager, Rice Krispies. "This report provides a fantastic resource that parents can use to create lasting memories with their children."

In addition to insight from real moms, the report offers tips gathered from a panel of renowned parenting experts, including a psychologist, children's rock star and authors.

"This report helps parents to take comfort in knowing that every single moment doesn't have to be a teaching moment," according to Susan J. Oliver, executive director, Playing for Keeps, and one of the report's parenting experts. "Some of the most valuable lessons that children learn are through self-directed, free play."

To strengthen Rice Krispies' leadership role in connecting parents and children, the brand launched its successful Operation Spark initiative and ChildhoodIsCalling.com website last year. This educational initiative was created in partnership with Playing for Keeps, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting parent-child connections through play.

"For generations, families have gathered around the breakfast table to hear the Snap! Crackle! Pop! of Rice Krispies cereal," Karl says. "This initiative is a way for our brand to not only spark a connection between parents and kids at the breakfast table, but throughout the day as well."
