"Make a Connection" - Tip from Battle Creek Retiree

"My tip to retirees is to stay-in-touch with your retired co-workers. We (Kellogg Retirees) probably spent more time with our co-workers than we did our own families. I recommend attending one of the Kellogg Retiree Functions and re-connecting with some of the people we may have lost touch with. We may not remember their names...at least I find it harder and harder to...but, once you see their face or hear their voice it will come back to you. It will help to refresh some memories, good or bad, that were a great part of your life." -- Submitted by Sandi Nowicki, Battle Creek
Many of you have spent more than half of your lives working - which means you've also spent a good portion of your time, your lives with your co-workers. As Sandi Nowicki said, "We (Kellogg Retirees) probably spent more time with our co-workers than we did our own families."

During that time you probably made a connection with a one or more of your co-workers, but because of all the things life has thrown at you, you may have lost touch with many of your fellow retirees. Now may be a good time to reach out and re-connect with friends and co-workers from your past.

What are the benefits of connecting and staying connected?*
  • People who live a rich, emotionally connected life live longer, are healthier and are happier than those who don't.

  • A connected life is free of charge and is readily available.

  • Once you start connecting, you'll instantly see your health improve, your feelings of well-being skyrocket and your worries all but disappear.

What are ways to connect with others?
  • Connect with your family - There are many ways to help keep a connected and fun relationship with other family members. The most important point is to begin!

    Here's some ideas:
    • schedule family dinners, consider vacations together - even for one or two days
    • arrange "game nights" to play cards or board games
    • enjoy movies together - rent one or go to the theater,
    • plan a family reunion
    • pick up the telephone instead of waiting for someone to call you
    • write letters, learn to use e-mails

There's plenty to do if you decide to make the effort to make it happen!

  • Connect with you friends - Though scheduling any event seems harder than ever any more due to busy schedules, it is worth the effort.

Friendship provides a healthy and important social release for individuals.Staying in touch with old friends brings a stability and comfort for most people. Making the effort to meet new people can also be energizing and stimulating.

Most people find commonality with others who share interests in the same activities. What new interest might bring you new friends?
