Two weeks after Kellogg donated five semitrailer loads of product to help victims of Hurricane Gustav, another five loads are en route as of September 17 to the U.S. Gulf Coast to aid those impacted by Hurricane Ike.
The contribution was once again spearheaded by our Remarketing & Returns Management team. It includes a variety of our ready-to-eat cereals, cereal bars and snacks such as cookies, crackers and fruit-flavored snacks. They are again being distributed through our longtime food-banking and disaster-relief partner, Feeding America, formerly known as America's Second Harvest.
Depending on need in the areas devastated by Ike, some of the donated product may be allocated to the continuing Gustav relief efforts.
Ike, the fifth hurricane and most powerful so far of the current season, made its U.S. landfall Saturday at Galveston, Texas, as a Category 2 storm. According to the most recent media reports, it caused damage in Texas and parts of western Louisiana estimated at more than $25 million.
Earlier this month, Hurricane Gustav effected thousands of residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and other areas of the Gulf Coast, where it caused flooding, wind damage and widespread power outages.
Feeding America is coordinating its ongoing Ike and Gustav relief efforts with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and American Red Cross.
During the past five years, Kellogg has actively supported the victims of numerous natural disasters including the tsunami in South Asia and Africa, hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the floods in Mumbai, India, and last year's wildfires in California and Montana.
So far this year alone, Kellogg has made a quarter-million-dollar contribution to the earthquake relief efforts in China as well as a $100,000 donation to Feeding America for disaster-relief planning and preparedness. We've also donated three truckloads of product to help flood victims in Iowa and storm victims in the southeastern United States.
Kellogg's charitable donations to Feeding America and its network of more than 200 food banks in times of crisis are consistent with our ongoing commitment to supporting the communities in which we live and operate. |
