Battle Creek Retirees' Association

Jim Nelson
President, Battle Creek Retirees' Association

"Hello. Let me introduce myself. I'm Jim Nelson, and I'm serving as the new President of the Battle Creek Retirees' Association. I'd like to invite all Battle Creek retirees and their spouses to attend our monthly meetings held at Burnham Brook Center at 9 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, except for June and December.

"Each association meeting includes coffee and snacks, a raffle for Kellogg cereal and snack products, and a program that is either educational, entertaining or both," reports Jim.

Other reminders from Jim: Each June, the association has an annual potluck picnic. In December, there is a holiday gala, which is a sit-down meal at the cost of $10 per person at McCamly Plaza. This year's gala is on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Tickets are available from any association board member and at the Porter Street company store each Wednesday.

"I hope to see many of you enjoying our meetings and events," adds Jim.

Denver Keebler Association of Retired Employees

The Denver KARE group held their annual picnic at Prospect Park Arbor House on Aug. 19, 2008. It was a fun time for all to share a meal, discuss recent vacations and reminisce while looking through photos of past Keebler retiree gatherings. The group thanks Dorothy Swindt, KARE President, and the other board members for setting up the annual gatherings.

Kellogg Sales Retirees' Reunion

Sept. 25-28, a group of 33 sales retirees and spouses gathered for three days in Nashville, Tenn., for the 2008 Kellogg Sales Retirees' Reunion. This event, which started as a small golf outing organized by Southern Region sales retirees Ken Adcock, Gene Williams and Clyde Aiken, has grown to include sales retirees from all corners of the U.S.

There was plenty to do again this year, but the group still found time to renew friendships, reminisce about the past and just plain "catch up." Special thanks to the events planners and hosts: retirees Carl and Ramona McQuinn from New Orleans, La., and Derek and Robin (not pictured) Stanley from Camden, S.C. (see picture below).

On Friday and Saturday, smaller groups got together to enjoy the many sites of Nashville, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Hermitage (home of President Andrew Jackson) and Gen. Jackson Riverboat cruises.

After a dinner Friday, a charter bus transported the group for an evening at the famous Grand Ole Opry where a highlight was seeing Kellogg memorabilia on display. (Kellogg sponsored many different country music venues years ago.) The reunion culminated Saturday evening with a group dinner at Nashville's famous Stock-Yard restaurant.

Pat Strutzel and Ben Irvin Marilyn Davis and Jane (Pearson) Ellis enjoy the reunion.

Fall 2009 reunion planning is underway by retirees Pat Strutzel from Loveland, Ohio, and Ron Salimao from Charlotte, N.C. Watch the Senior K website for details. All Kellogg and Kellogg subsidiary field sales retirees are welcome and encouraged to attend. For information, send e-mail to ronsalimao3@aol.com

Omaha Retirees' Association

Many Omaha retirees enjoyed the casino trip to Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa, on Aug. 20, but perhaps no one more than Willie Brown, who was a big winner!

Among the many events organized for the Omaha retirees by their active board members are luncheons at various restaurants, an annual dinner, different trips or tours, and a Christmas event. You'll find information about these activities as well as photographs on their retiree association website, which was created and is maintained by the son of an association committee member. Check it out at: www.cornhuskerkellogg.com.

Enjoying fun at the annual Golf Scramble are, left to right, Dave Rainey, Gary Ryan, Tom Gordon and Jerry Prifert.

Lancaster Retirees' Association

Many Lancaster retirees enjoyed a beautiful day and lots of camaraderie at the June 12 picnic, held at Amos Herr Park in Landisville. Great food and good times were enjoyed by all, reports Ruth Vickers, president, Lancaster Retirees' Association. The door prizes were a big hit as usual. Ruth also reminds Lancaster retires of the plan to collect food for the Salvation Army Food Bank at the December 11 luncheon.

Linda Jo Morrow
In June 2004, Lancaster Retiree Linda Jo Morrow felt the impact of watching her oldest son, Mark, a Marine, leave for Iraq. She remembers, "It felt like someone ripped out my heart." Mark has since returned home and is currently stationed in Hawaii, but that day changed Linda Jo's life. She felt she had to do something and she started "Mums for Moms."

As Linda notes on her website, www.mumsformomlancasterpa.com, she "…wanted to reach out to other mothers who also had children serving overseas…. wanted to listen to their stories, what they were going through … but more importantly… wanted to cheer up the mothers and herself as well." She has been delivering flowers to mothers, step moms, wives and fiancés of military men and women in Lancaster County and beyond.

During the journey of delivering Mums for Moms, Linda Jo has been interviewed by numerous TV stations and newspapers, and was among the five people in the county asked to greet President Bush and the First Lady during a campaign stop at the Lancaster Airport, Oct. 27, 2004. Linda Jo has also been awarded the Red Rose in the Lancaster New Era newspaper for her many achievements in the community.

In October 2007, Mums for Moms started another service by sending care packages to the troops. One year later, Linda Jo has provided 249 care packages to individual troops. The care packages include items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, razors, bug spray, pens and notepads, books, chewing gum, coffee and all kinds of snack food.

If you would like to donate or provide the name of a soldier to receive a care package from Linda Jo, her address is 554 Vista Road, Columbia, Pa. 17512. Her telephone is 717-285-7675 and her e-mail is mmorrow554@embarqumail.com

San Leandro Retirees' Association

"We are carrying on the Kellogg Company traditions here in California," reports Virginia Sprott, President, San Leandro Retirees' Association. "We still meet every other month at the Ranch Restaurant in Hayward, where we conduct our business and then enjoy a great deal of socializing and lunch." Many retirees get together during the year for various functions and outings. The association's two main events are the spring luncheon and the holiday luncheon, which are both well attended.

Thinking of Starting a Retiree Association?

Our retiree associations were started by someone, or a group of people, who wanted to get together with former colleagues.

Here are some things to think about:
  • Are there 20 or more retirees in your location with an interest?
  • Is someone willing to be a leader or main contact?
  • How often would you like to meet?
Anyone interested in learning more may contact Annette Zalner at 1-800-kellogg, extension 2414. "I'm happy to offer guidance on how to get an organization up and going," says Annette.
